When the Lights Go Out, the Future Pulls Over and Plays Dead

San Francisco has finally achieved the future—and it runs on an extension cord.
Pull the plug, and the city’s vaunted autonomous vehicles collapse where they stand, blinking helplessly like goldfish who’ve wandered out of the bowl.
One power outage and suddenly the smartest cars in America are blocking intersections, causing traffic jams, and behaving like props from a low-budget sci-fi movie where the robots freeze mid-apocalypse because nobody paid the electric bill.
This is the capital of Silicon Valley, mind you.
A place stuffed with billionaires who speak in TED Talk sentences and assure us that “disruption” is always good, especially when it disrupts other people.
Yet when the grid hiccups—when stoplights go dark and data streams falter—the robotaxis do not heroically adapt.
They panic.
They stop.
They become hazards.
At least a human driver in a blackout knows how to roll down a window and make eye contact.
The autonomous vehicle knows only one thing: paralysis.
Which raises the obvious question: Who asked for this?
What problem, exactly, are autonomous vehicles solving?
Is driving so unbearable that we must entrust our lives to a rolling filing cabinet that needs constant supervision from satellites, servers, and software updates?
Traffic congestion?
No.
Emissions?
Dubious.
Safety?
Ask the pedestrians, cyclists, and the occasional unlucky bodega cat.
The real problem being solved is far simpler: there are too many people earning wages.
Autonomous vehicles are not about freedom; they’re about payroll.
They exist to eliminate drivers—bus drivers, cabbies, delivery workers—the very people politicians claim to care about when election season rolls around.
These jobs are “unskilled,” we’re told, as if navigating a city full of lunatics, potholes, and double-parked delivery vans requires no ability whatsoever.
The unskilled worker, apparently, must be replaced by a $200,000 robot that keels over when PG&E sneezes.
And then there’s the small matter of electricity. And it doesn’t matter whether it is day or night.
When the power goes out, where exactly do you charge your autonomous vehicle?
The same place you charge your phone during a blackout: nowhere.
You can’t pour electricity out of a kombucha bottle.
You can’t Venmo a charging station.
You can’t ask the grid nicely to come back because your robotaxi has feelings.
The entire system assumes a perfectly functioning infrastructure in a country that can’t keep the lights on during a heat wave.
This is less “The Jetsons” and more Jurassic Park: highly confident people insisting they’ve controlled nature, moments before the fence goes dark.
The autonomous vehicle is the velociraptor of urban planning—expensive, temperamental, and always one power failure away from chaos.
Or take animal metaphors closer to home: these cars are fainting goats.
One loud noise—zap—and down they go, stiff-legged, blocking traffic.
Meanwhile, the human driver—flawed, distracted, caffeinated—remains astonishingly resilient.
Humans adapt.
Humans improvise.
Humans don’t need firmware updates to wave someone through an intersection.
Yet we are told humans are the problem, and machines are the solution, even as the machines demonstrate all the survival instincts of a stunned opossum.
We are driving headlong into a disaster of epic proportions, wrapped in the smug language of innovation.
Autonomous vehicles promise a frictionless future while creating a brittle present—one blackout away from gridlock, one server error from absurdity.
It is the stupidest, most unnecessary innovation yet, a monument to technological vanity.
Alan King would have summed it up perfectly: “We invented a car that can’t drive without permission.”
And then he’d ask the question no venture capitalist ever answers—who’s paying for this nonsense?
